Disability Services

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme was launched in July 2013 to provide support to people with a disability, their families and carers.

The NDIS is the largest government reform that has been implemented in decades and marks important changes being made by the Federal Government to disability support in Australia.

The aim of the scheme is to deliver a life-long approach to supporting people with a permanent and significant disability that is funded individually so people can receive the care, supports and services based on their individual needs, goals and aspirations. The NDIS gives people more choice and control over how, when and where your supports are provided, and gives you certainty you will receive the support you need over your lifetime.

The funds provided for each person is based on an assessment of their individual needs for what is currently required and for their future development and ongoing well-being. The NDIS is based on an insurance model, where the costs associated with a person’s support needs is shared among the wider population.
